We are so happy to have a Yemeni coffee back on the menu!
Why is Yemeni coffee so special?
Thanks to the work of Qima coffee and Dr. Christophe Montagnon, we now have an explanation. When they decided to map the genetic landscape of coffee varietals in Yemen, they ended up discovering not only a new variety, but a new mother population: Yemenia.
That is one of the biggest coffee discoveries of all time.
This lot, from Haitham Alamari, is an exquisite lot made entirely of the Yemenia genetics.
It feels like we are drinking aged wine full of berry notes. It has character and complexity, and the acidity reminds us of tropical fruits. It’s round and sweet, and the silky texture can make you think of delicate dark chocolate. The aftertaste is long and reminds us of pistachios.
Yemen was the first country to cultivate coffee after it was discovered in the wild forests of Ethiopia, and 98% of the world’s known cultivated Arabica can be traced back to the country.
Despite its rich history, Yemeni coffee now produces only 0.1% of the world’s coffee volume. Qima coffee aims to use coffee to better the lives of the Yemeni farmers by re-introducing one of the best and rarest coffee on Earth.
We strongly recommend you visit Qima’s site to learn more about Yemen and its coffee history.
